MVLA Community Scholars improves the economic mobility and quality of life of local, high potential, underserved youth by providing scholarships to make college accessible and individual mentoring to make a four-year degree achievable.

College is Life Changing
“The fastest growing populations in the state are predominantly those who have been underrepresented in higher education and who are least well served by our education systems.  These include young people who would be the first in their families to go to college, low-income individuals of all races and ethnicities, and immigrants.

“Only 21% of black adults and 10% of Latino adults have attained a college degree, compared to 47% of Asian adults and 38% of white adults. “
 http://www.collegecampaign.org/press-room/pressreleases.html

“If all ethnic groups had the same educational attainment and earnings as whites, total personal income in the state would be about $65.5 billion higher.”
http://measuringup.highereducation.org

“High school graduates can expect, on average, to earn $1.2 million; those with a bachelor's degree, $2.1 million; and people with a master's degree, $2.5 million.”
http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa072602a.htm

“Higher levels of saving, increased personal/professional mobility, improved quality of life for their offspring, better consumer decision making, and more hobbies and leisure activities (Institute for Higher Education Policy, 1998)…Public benefits of attending college include increased tax revenues, greater workplace productivity, increased consumption, increased workforce flexibility, and decreased reliance on government financial support.” http://www.ericdigests.org/2003-3/value.htm

We strive to change lives for graduates of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School district who may not otherwise choose to attend college or who are at risk of dropping out due to financial and transitional challenges. We believe that college not only facilitates future financial, physical and emotional health, it also offers self-discovery, expands perspective and creates more life choices.
