Scholars
Led by a vision to make college accessible and a four-year degree achievable for underserved students who could not otherwise attend college, the MVLA Community Scholars Program has provided scholarships to over 100 local public high school students to offset college fees, living expenses and instructional materials costs.
Students are selected based on four criteria:
- Financial need (average household income less than $50,000)
- Academic readiness and performance (average GPA is 3.0)
- Personal characteristics (e.g. perseverance, initiative, responsibility)
- Life-changing potential of the program (i.e. first generation college student)
Fifteen scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District intending to attend a four-year college, though recipients may start at a two-year college. Grants are tailored to individual needs, ranging in amount from $1000 to $5000, and may vary as needs change as the student moves through college. MLVA Community Scholars does not discriminate based on ethnicity, gender or citizenship.
To our Scholars, we also offer Summer Seminars , a free, three-part, summer course in managing time and money and developing study skills for college.
