"Forks do not go in the microwave!"
Looking for some handy tidbits of advice from our current Scholars?
Read what your fellow students have learned about succeeding in college.
- Make up for restless nights by taking frequent naps... just not in class! Make a grocery list when you go to the store, it will save you time and money. Go out on the weekends. If you live in a city, always carry enough money to take an emergency cab ride home. Get to know your professors and sit in the front row of your classes. Figure out the best way for you to learn and do it. Go to class even when you don't want to. No one cares if you don't go to class or forget to turn in a paper, no one but you - accept the responsibility for your actions in regards to school. If you're struggling, get help immediately. Forks do not go in the microwave. Finally, it is not the end of the world to take a leave of absence from school... seek help and come back next semester ready to work hard and play harder.
- I would offer my fellow students the advice to never be afraid to ask any questions. Creating a list of questions as they come helps when needing to discuss them with your mentor/ any counselor or instructor. Also, keep a file with any needed paperwork for convenience and or unexpected meetings.
- By doing the reading, your knowledge spreads out and you are learning more than what you might think of. Reading is knowledge, and knowledge is life.
- Stay organized...keep a to-do list and take care of all the necessary paperwork as soon as possible.
- Make sure you know exactly what classes are required for general education and for your major. Schools often add or remove course requirements, so keep updated and visit your academic counselor at least once a quarter.
- Get involved with many groups and always be aware of what your opportunities and resources are.
- Get to know your peers and professors!
